There's no tricks or gimmicks, when it comes to personal finance I live by 7 principles that I freely share with everyone. By applying these principles the light of hope and peace will begin to shine bright on your personal financial path.
I think everyone would agree with me, spending less than you make is a wise idea. The fun part is knowing how to control your spending behaviors and living within your means. Build an effective budget, buy what you need not what you want (unless you can afford it), know where your money is going.
This may be the most controversial principle, but I believe it's fundamental in any personal finance journey. Avoid credit cards, car loans, HELOC's and other debt related financial product's pushed in your face on social media. There's a lot to discuss here, but for simplicity sakes: Don't use debt!
It's hard, having that extra money laying around burns a hole in your pocket. But, as you save your money and invest wisely you'll begin to see your money working hard for you. Have an emergency plan, save for planned expenses and when you're able, invest in your future.
Gratitude is a powerful tool that overcomes entitlement, selfish desires and an unhealthy and unhappy life. It's hard not to compare what you have to others, someone always has more than you. Take a step back and be grateful for what you have, it'll change your life.
Giving more than receiving is a sign of an individual that builds the people and community around them. The cool thing is it's not just money, you can give of your time, talents and gifts. A generous life doesn't come after you've made a lot of money, it starts way before that.
Everyone talks about the value of working hard at a job, but for me, working hard is all about personal progress. Through sacrifice, growth and hard life lessons, working hard will develop your physical, mental and social well being. Aren't we all trying to be the best humans we can? It's going to require some hard work to get there.
Whatever higher power you believe in, love and build a strong relationship with that power. If you don't believe in God, use this as a thought experiment. Loving God more than this world means adjusting your perspective to realize there's more to life than just money and fame. What kind of human do you want to become? How does your relationship with a higher power affect your choices?
